Good grief! I was belatedly reading Panorama (the Saturday arts section of The Canberra Times) today and came across an ad for a Howard Jones concert.
Howard Jones?! What on earth is he doing playing Canberra? And, even more perplexing, The Southern Cross Club! (more widely known for it's jazz concerts rather than acoustic tours of 80s Synthpop stars. An oxymoron if ever there was one)
How can he justify $45 for a ticket when you can see the (reformed) INXS and Simple Minds (plus Arrested Development) at the AIS Arena the night before for $90?
Has anyone in Canberra even bought a Howard Jones album in the last 20 years? (Well OK, I bought a tape of his 12" album last year for 50 cents but I don't think that counts)
And, most importantly, does he still wear those huge colourful fluffy handknitted mohair jumpers? If so, maybe we could arrange a special Stitch 'n' Bitch outing on the night....
I can't believe Howard Jones is still going! I saw him in concert in Bristol, UK, when I was still at school so probably 1984. I saw the Thompson Twins at about the same time. I am having a flashback of my bushy hair gelled to unbelievable heights!
ReplyDeleteOh it's enough that we sit in view of one of the posters advertising the gig when we knit at the Southern Cross Club. No, really, I nearly coughed up a lung laughing when I saw it.
ReplyDeleteoh sorry that is way too funny that he even has a concert (let alone charges that much to get in), sorry to laugh Howard hahaha! I am now on a trip down memory lane, can't even think what old howard used to sing roflol!!!!!
ReplyDeleteRYC: I know I saw Mango in the city and it was like *expensive*, in the UK it's the place where you want to go for cheapie basics a bit like Hennes, Mango in Spain, being Spanish, was a real eye opener, very cheap, cool and stylish, absolutley loved it.
I have to say I am a tad disappointed with the shopping here (yep that was one thing I don't like about Aus ahhhh!!), there is no in between, you either have your David Jones or the cr*pola, there isn't M&S or Hennes where you can breeze in, sift through, get basics, not make a huge dent in your pocket but still have profit and a positive experience. well that said it!!!
not got over to visit your blog too much this last week, been extremely busy with boring old life stuff, eeeuuuhhh but we'll be in Canberra soon, don't forget that coffee????!!!
just seen the post on Queanbeyan oooooooh it sounds like thrifting heaven!!! good god how far is that from you - didn't you give me that as a thrifting option on your wonderful Canberra list?? I will definitely be up for going there if it is possible!
ReplyDeleteQueanbeyan is miles away. Must be at least a 20 minute drive!!
ReplyDelete(ROFL in Sydney terms, OK?)
Erm, Howard used to sing... oh bugger me singing - just go here and hit the MP3 samples: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Howard-Jones/dp/B000002HE1/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-1604993-7713416?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1173781397&sr=8-1
If you're after cheapy basics in AU you need to check out Temt, SES, Target, Big W and Supre.
Always up for coffe and a little showing off of the local op shops. As long as you don't buy the stuff I'm wanting ;-)
(Can I say I really want to go see Simple Minds as I had the hugest crush on Jim Kerr in the 80s??)
I had a boyfriend who thought he WAS Jim Kerr - preferred Charlie Burchill, myself.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Charlie had that lovely grin and was the reason I got into Propaganda in their later years. In fact didn't half of Simple Minds end up in Propaganda?
ReplyDeleteI would totally go to a Howard Jones concert if it were aimed at the knitting demographic. How fun would it be to knit away on a sock whilst singing along with "No One Is to Blame?"
ReplyDeleteI love it!!
